Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled powder useful as electronic materials, having high density and electrical characteristics industrially, by blending basic zirconium carbonate with a Ti compound in the aromatic ratio of Zr and Ti of a given ratio to give sediment and calcinating the sediment. CONSTITUTION:Basic zirconium carbonate is blended with a Ti compound such as TiCl4, titanium nitrate or titanium sulfate in the atomic ratio of Ti to Zr of 0.05-0.3, incorporated with ammonia water which contains neither Na nor K and is readily decomposed at a calcination stage and adjusted to >=10wt.% oxide concentration to form sediment. Then the sediment is washed, dried by vibrating fluidized drying method to give powder having <=0.3mu submicron. Then the powder is calcined at 700-1,300 deg.C to give modified zirconia.
