Abstract

PURPOSE: To make a DC voltage component applied between a pixel electrode and a counter electrode zero by applying a pulse, whose polarity is opposite to that of a gate pulse applied to a thin film transistor TFT, to a gate line in the next stage of this TFT simultaneously with the gate pulse and setting the potential of the counter electrode to the center value of a data AC signal or a value approximating it. CONSTITUTION: A part of the pixel electrode attached to the TFT is superposed on a part of an adjacent gate line through an insulating film, and a pulse whose polarity is opposite to the gate pulse which drives the TFT is applied to the adjacent gate line 2 in synchronism with the gate pulse, and an AC waveform is applied to a data line 1, and the potential of a counter electrode 8 is set to the center potential of this AC waveform or a potential approximating it. Thus, the DC voltage component is reduced to zero in principle to eliminate the degradation of display characteristics, degradation in orientation of liquid crystal, reduction of the life for destruction of the pixel electrode, etc.
