Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a non-linear optical device which can display enough a function of a liquid crystal, and also, excellent in its film forming property and can obtain easily a large area by forming a non-linear optical layer by a mixture obtained by dispersing a non-linear optical material into a ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A non-linear optical device 10 has a non-linear optical layer which are been formed by a mixture obtained by dispersing a non-linear optical material into a ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal 13. Accordingly, the non-linear optical material which is scarcely oriented usually is also oriented in a high level by a strong orienting property of the high polymer liquid crystal, and shows a sufficient non-linear characteristic. When an incident light of, for instance, a frequency omega is radiated to the non-linear optical layer which has been formed in such a way, not only a fundamental component of the same frequency omega as that of the incident light but also a light beam of a frequency 2omega are outputted. In this case, a ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer has a sufficient electric field response function even in a usual use state, takes an oriented state corresponding to the electric field strength, and accordingly, a modulation corresponding to the electric field strength is executed. Also, the film forming property is satisfactory and a large screen can be obtained easily by a drawing orientation.
