Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title additive which can give an epoxy resin excellent in flexibility, adhesiveness, etc., by reacting a specified diisocyanate compound with an alcohol and reacting the product with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:A diisocyanate compound (A) of formula I (wherein R<2> is hexamethylene or tolylene), e.g., hexamethylene diisocyanate, is reacted with 2-3mol., per mol. of component A, of an alcohol (B) of formula II (wherein R<1> is a 6-20C alkyl), e.g., hexyl alcohol, for 30min-5hr at 0-100 deg.C to obtain a dicarbamate compound of formula III. This compound is reacted with 2-10mol., per mol. of this compound, of an epihalohydrin (C) in the presence of an alkali and a catalyst to obtain the title additive comprising an epoxy compound of formula IV (wherein n is 0-5). 100pts.wt. uncured epoxy resin is mixed with 2-100pts.wt. said additive, a curing agent, and, optionally, a modifier, a filler, a diluent, etc., and the resulting mixture is cured to obtain a cured epoxy resin.
