Abstract

PURPOSE:To considerably decrease the number of driver ICs and to obtain an inexpensive large-capacity liquid crystal panel by using SmC smectic C elements and adopting multi-divided driving with a simple matrix. CONSTITUTION:The stable state of ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules 11 is changed by a DC voltage and the liquid crystal molecules 11 attain the state as if the molecules stop at the place near the state of + or -theta by the ensuing impression of an AC voltage thereto. Display, etc., are executed by utilizing such phenomenon. The state of the liquid crystal molecules 11 can be stably maintained if the frequency of the AC voltage to be impressed after the impression of the voltage capable of inverting the ferroelectric liquid crystal 11 is heightened and the amplitude is lowered. The multi-divided driving which is not possible with an LCD of a TN type is thereby enabled and the large- capacity liquid crystal device is realized by the simple pure matrix. The inexpensive electro-optic device which provides high image quality is thus obtd.
