Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal phase grating which can be increased in refractive index distribution width, i.e. phase variation quantity as much as possible by using >=two kinds of potentials applied to one or both of a couple of electrodes and suppressing the potential rise between the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:At least >=two kinds of electrode potentials are generated for at least one of a 1st electrode surface 1 and 2nd electrode surfaces 2-4, and then the leak quantity of a voltage is suppressed to increase the potential difference between a maximum potential part and a minimum potential part, thereby widening the refractive index distribution width and increasing phase variation quantity. Consequently, the liquid phase grating is obtained which can be increased in the refractive index distribution width, i.e. the phase variation quantity as much as possible.
