Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a high-density polycrystalline superconductor having high critical current density and worked in high accuracy, by locally heating and melting a formed oxide superconducting material, quenching the molten part, forming the obtained amorphous material into a prescribed shape and annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:For example, powdery raw materials composed of e.g. Y2O3, BaCO3 and CuO are mixed with each other at a molar ratio of 1:4:6 and formed to obtain a formed oxide superconducting material having a shape of e.g. disk 1. The material is placed on a cooling plate 2 made of a metal having high specific heat and an arc discharge is generated between the cooling plate and a carbon electrode 3 placed opposite to the cooling plate 2. The disk 1 is locally heated and melted 4 by the arc discharge and immediately quenched at a rate suitable for forming an amorphous structure (e.g. 10<2>-10<4> deg.C/sec). The process is repeatedly applied to the whole surface of the disk 1 to obtain an amorphous material 5 having a density of 5.8-6.2. The amorphous material is worked 5 into a prescribed shape in high accuracy (<=100mum) and annealed at 850-1,050 deg.C for 2-5hr in an oxidizing atmosphere such as O2 gas atmosphere. Oxygen is included in the amorphous material 5 to obtain a high-density polycrystalline superconductor 6 of formula YBa2Cu3O7, etc.
