Abstract

PURPOSE:To miniaturize the whole shape of a magnetoresistance element and to reduce the phase shift of the magnetic field applied to the magnetoresistance element, by setting the composition of a ferromagnetic alloy membrane to a specific wt. ratio. CONSTITUTION:A linear scale is equipped with a linear magnetic recording medium 1 generating a magnetic signal, magnetoresistance elements 2, an input terminal 3 and an output terminal 4, and two magnetoresistance elements 2 are always placed in magnetic fields different by 180 deg. from each other and, when the positions of the elements 2 change along the medium 1, output voltage having frequency two times that of the magnetic signal is repeatedly obtained at the terminal 4. Herein, when each of the elements 2 is constituted of an alloy membrane having a composition composed of Ni80-Fe(20-x)-Mn(x), the resistivity of this alloy is sufficiently as high as about 28.6muOMEGAcm and, therefore, the necessary min. dimension is reduced and the shift of a magnetic field to be applied can be reduced.
