Nature, acidic substance; elemental analysis (%) (as C12H10N2O8.2H2O), C 42.04, H 3.97, N 8.02; molecular formula, C12H10N2O8; color reactions, positive to KMnO4 bleaching reaction and iodine reaction and negative to FeCl3 reaction and ninhydrin reaction; etc. USE:Remedy for cataract, retinopathy, neurosis, rhinitis, etc., which are complicates of diabetes. It has activity to inhibit aldose reductase. PREPARATION:A microbial strain belonging to genus Coniochaeta and capable of producing physiologically active substance M4529 [e.g. Coniochaeta ellipsoidea M4529 (FERM P-9505)] is cultured in a medium preferably at pH 3.0-9.5 for 2-9 days.
