PURPOSE:To obtain an insect pest controlling agent, containing an active ingredient extracted from pericarps of citrus fruits, etc., and capable of exhibiting excellent mothproofing effects on a wide range of insect pests, such as various wood or sanitary insect pests, with high safety and low toxicity to humans, animals and fishes and hardly any residual toxicity. CONSTITUTION:An insect pest controlling agent containing one or more of obacunone, limonin, nomilin, deoxylimonin, deacetylnomilin, limonexic acid, etc., extracted from pericarps and/or seeds of citrus fruits, as an active ingredient. Citrus UNSHIU Marc., orange, Citrus NATSUDAIDAI Hayata, Citrus HASSAKU Hort. ex Tanaka, grapefruit, lemon, etc., are cited as the citrus fruits. An organic solvent, such as dichloroethane, is added to pericarps or seeds thereof to carry out sufficient extraction treatment at ambient temperature or while heating by a conventional method and the extraction residues are then filtered off to distil away the solvent from the resultant filtrate or concentrate the filtrate. Thereby an extract containing the obacunone, limonin, etc., is obtained and purified by ordinary column chromatography, etc., to afford the aimed active ingredient.
