Abstract
PURPOSE:To contrive the improvement of the coding characteristic by combining sub-sampling and vector quantization so as to apply vector quantization to a prediction error signal adaptively. CONSTITUTION:An input picture is subjected to sub-sample regularly and the resulting picture signal is coded and sent. Then the sub-sampling signal is subjected to interpolation processing to predict and calculate the picture signal of unsampled picture element. A difference between a predicted picture signal and an original picture signal is calculated as a prediction residual signal and the vector formed by the predicted residual signal of plural picture elements is used as an object to vector quantization. The predicted residual is calculated in this way, then since the offset component given to the picture signal due to the fluctuation in the lighted light is eliminated, a coding processing having general usefulness with high coding efficiency with respect to various contents of the picture is realized.
