Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance purification capacity of exhaust gas by forming a heat resistant carrier of inorganic oxide which consists of both calcium aluminate, fused silica, hydraulic alumina or activated alumina and a potassium titanate whisker of specified amount. CONSTITUTION:Respective prescribed amounts of calcium aluminate, fused silica, hydraulic alumina or activated alumina are blended with 1-5wt.% potassium titanate whisker and furthermore water or proper amount together with an organic binder is added to the mixture and thereafter this mixture is kneaded. After extruding and molding this kneaded material e.g. into a honeycomb shape, solidifying and aging the molded form and drying it at about 100 deg.C, a carrier for a catalyst is produced by heat-treating it at about 1,000 deg.C for about 20min in the air. The obtained carrier has large compression strength and specific surface area in combination and when carrying Pd catalytic component or the like on this carrier, combustion exhaust gas can be efficiently purified without destroying the carrier even at high temp. for a long time.
