Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress the decomposition of TiCN at the time of sintering and to produce a TiCN-base cermet as a cutting tool material having excellent chipping resistance by subjecting a green compact essentially consisting of TiCN to high-temp. sintering in a specific high-pressure gaseous Ar atmosphere at the time of producing the TiCN-base cermet. CONSTITUTION:TiCN powder having 0.8-2.5mum average grain size is used as an essential component and powder of Co, Ni, etc., as a binder at the time of sintering is mixed with hard powder of TaC, NbC, WC, Mo2C, etc., having the same grain size. The green compact is produced by subjecting the mixture formed in such a manner to press molding. This green compact is sintered at 1,350-1,500 deg.C in the gaseous Ar atmosphere of 2-200atm. The TiCN-base cermet for cutting tools is produced which obviates the decomposition of the TiCN during sintering and the consequent remaining of the pores by the gaseous N2 formed during decomposition and accordingly is free from the deterioration in chipping resistance.
