Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain in high productivity the titled yarn with high strength and high initial modulus, also free from mutual fiber sticking, by dry-wet spinning of a stock solution prepared by dissolving PVA in a mixed solvent made up of dimethylsulfoxide and water, followed by applying specific treatment. CONSTITUTION:First, a spinning stock solution is prepared by dissolving PVA in a solvent consisting mainly of a mixture of water and dimethylsulfoxide (hereafter referred to as DMSO). Thence, this stock solution is subjected to dry-wet spinning followed by extracting the residual solvent in the resulting undrawn yarn with either a mixture of DMSO and alcohol (pref. methanol) or another mixture of DMSO and ketone (pref. acetone) to obtain a DMSO- contg. yarn. This yarn is subsequently wet-drawn by a factor of 3-8 followed by dry heat drawing, thus obtaining the objective yarn. The DMSO content in said DMSO-contg. yarn is pref. 0.2-20wt.%.
