Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the coverage of a protective carbon film and to improve corrosion resistance by projecting ions of a rare gas to the surface of a magnetic recording layer prior to the formation of the protective carbon film on said layer and starting the formation of the protective carbon film during the continuation of the ion projection. CONSTITUTION:The ions (b) of the rare gas are projected on the surface of the magnetic recording layer (a) prior to the formation of the protective carbon film (c) on said layer and while the projection of the ions are kept continued, the formation of the protective carbon film (c) is started. Namely, the surface undulations of the magnetic recording layer (a) decreased by the leveling effect obtd. by etching if the ions (b) of the rare gas re projected on the ferromagnetic metallic column (magnetic recording layer) (a). Gap parts are no longer formed between the magnetic recording layer (a) and the protective carbon film (c) if the protective of the rare gas ions. The covering state of the protective carbon film (c) to the magnetic recording layer (a) is thereby improved and the magnetic recording medium having the excellent corrosion resistance is obtd.
