Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent interference of signal light with scattered light and to obtain a highly sensitive optical fiber gyroscope at low drift, by linking a light delaying optical fiber to an optical fiber, which is coupled with an optical fiber ring resonator, and providing propagation delay time difference between two light waves in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. CONSTITUTION:Light emitted from a laser light source 1 is split into two light beams through half mirrors 3a-3c. The light beams are received in two input ends of an optical fiber 9a, which is coupled into an optical fiber ring resonator R. A light delaying optical fiber 9c is connected to one incident end of the optical fiber 9a. The resonator R is operated so that propagation delay time difference is provided between two light waves in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Thus, the two light waves are not present in the resonator R at the same time. In this way, the interference of the signal light with the reflected light at the end surface of the fiber 9a and with the scattered light yielded in the fiber 9 is prevented. Thus the highly sensitive rotation detecting operation is performed at low drift.
