USE:A ferroelectric liquid crystal material useful as liquid crystal display elements, electrooptical shutters, electrooptical apertures, optical modulators, optical path changeover switches for optical communication, etc. PREPARATION:1-Methyl-2-ethoxycarbonylethyl 4-aminobenzoate expressed by formula II is condensed with aldehydes expressed by formula III in an anhydrous solvent (e.g. anhydrous alcohol, ethyl acetate or toluene) at ambient temperature to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
