Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the titled composition exhibiting a wide liquid crystal state even at ambient temperature, having quick response, capable of displaying moving picture and useful for large screens and curved screens, by comprising a ferroelectric low molecular liquid crystal compound and a side chain type polymeric liquid crystal compound having a smectic C phase. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition comprises (A) a ferroelectric low molecular liquid crystal compound represented by the formula (R<5> is 1-20C alkyl or alkoxy; R* is an optically active group containing an asymmetrical C; m and n are >=0) or the like and (B) a side chain type polymeric liquid crystal compound having a smectic C phase (preferable example; polyacryl, polysiloxane, polyether or polyester polymeric liquid crystal compound having a number-average molecular weight of 1,000-400,000). Said composition is suitable for the display elements of electronic calculators, watches or the like, electronic optical shutters, electronic optical diaphragms, optical modulators, optical path-changing switches for optical communication, memories, liquid crystal printer heads, focal distance-adjustable lenses, etc.
