Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a reading speed faster when the width of an original is small and to obtain a fine picture by reading the picture of the original at a regulated effective reading width with an effective reading width control means. CONSTITUTION:When an original 1a is set on a setting stand, a width dimension is measured by an original width measuring part 10a. Based on the measured width dimension, an effective reading width control part 16a reads a reading bit corresponding to the original width from a reading width setting table 15, determines the reading width of an image sensor 40, and instructs that the both edge parts outside the reading bit are forcibly regarded as white. The sensor 40 reads the original 1a by means of the reading bit, and forcibly makes unnecessary parts at the both edges entirely white. Thus, since the original is read by designating the reading bit corresponding to the original width, the efficiency of data compressing is improved, and the speed is also improved. In addition, by forcibly making the both edge parts white, the soiling of the both edge parts of the reproduced recorded can be prevented.
