PURPOSE:To improve efficiency of irradiation and also to miniaturize a unit by setting the magnitude of a constant-level signal, subtracted from the output signal of a photo-detector according to picture information. CONSTITUTION:When picture information 12 resides on the surface of original 3, relatively high black-level signal (b) is obtained from amplifier 20 and substrated preadjusted constant-level signal (c) by subtracter 22. In this case, setting the level of signal (c) with signal b-c above level 0 obtains signal (f) as picture information. On the other hand, when picture information 12A is on the reverse surface or original 3, a slightly low level black signal is obtained and signal (c) is subtracted from the signal. In this case, the level of signal (c) is so set that signal b-c will be below level 0. Therefore, no read signal appears at output terminal 24.
