Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an Al2O3 group ceramic material having excellent mechanical characteristics, by burning a mixture of ZrC powder or ZrN powder having a ZrO2 layer on the surface, TiC powder or TiN powder having a TiO2 layer on the surface and Al2O3 powder. CONSTITUTION:A mixture comprising ZrC powder and/or ZrN powder having 0.5-10wt.% ZrO2 layer on the surface, TiC powder and/or TiN powder having 0.5-10wt.% TiO2 layer on the surface and the rest of Al2O3 powder is sintered in vacuum having <10<-2>Torr O2 partial pressure or in an inert atmosphere to give the aimed ceramic material. Each component of the above-mentioned ZrC, ZrN, TiC and TiN is dispersed, combined in Al2O3 and shows controlling effects on sintered texture and reinforcing effects on the texture. Desired reinforcing effects can not be obtained when the content of the components is <5wt.%. On the other hand the content of Al2O3 is relatively reduce and excellent characteristics of Al2O3 can not sufficiently utilized when the content of the components exceeds 40wt.%.
