Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain glass by providing such a process as to melt the glass feedstock under a pressure lower than the atmospheric one to enable the foams in the glass with high viscosity event at elevated temperatures to be removed in high efficiency in a short time. CONSTITUTION:When the objective glass is to be produced, such a process as to melt the glass feedstock under a pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure is provided. The overall process is as follows: the feedstock is heated under the atmospheric pressure, and after the whole system is kept in a fluidized state with 90% of said feedstock melted and a clarifier contained in the feedstock is dissolved in the melt, the whole system is preferably melted under a pressure lower than the atmospheric one for >=10min per cm of the depth of the melt. In addition, it is preferable that following the above melting process, the resultant system be further melted under the atmospheric pressure for >=1hr.
