Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable an arc discharge to occur hardly so as to increase the output of a laser light by a method wherein a current, which is narrow in a pulse width and large at a peak value, is made to flow through a pre-ionizing electrode by a saturable reactor provided to a circuit which grounds the pre-ionizing electrode. CONSTITUTION:When a high voltage power source 11 is made to operate, a saturable reactor 21 is made to act as a large inductance while a voltage applied to a cathode 4 is low and a current flowing through the saturable reactor 21 is small, wherefore a corona current flows hardly through the saturable reactor 21. When a corona current flowing through the saturable reactor 21 exceeds a specified value, the saturable reactor 21 becomes saturated, so that the reactor 21 decreases rapidly in capacitance to enable a large current to flow, and thus a corona current is able to flow which is is narrower in a pulse width and larger at a peak value as compared with a conven tional corona current A. Thereby, the discharge between the cathode 4 and a corona wire 9 is made to be intensified corresponding to the intensity fo a corona current, so that pre-ionizing electrons are generated in large quantities, the voltage generated by an arc discharge is made to increase, and the output of a laser light increases.
