CONSTITUTION:A unit angle signal generator M2 detects the reference position Nes of the crank angle by using the unit angle signal Ne of a crank shaft M1 and the reference signal G of a cam shaft M3 detected by a reference position generator M4. A signal Ne generated right after the reference signal G is decided as the reference position Nes. A gap detecting means M5 detects the gap (g) between the signals G and Ne and a decision means M7 never misdecides the reference position Nes because the variation width of the reference signal is between Neb and Nes as long as the (g) is within the specific range even if the variation width varies by + or -beta. If the width varies beyond the range, abnormality is decided immediately.
