Abstract

PURPOSE:To know the current position of a vehicle and its distance to a target position by providing an initial position input means, an azimuth detecting means, a position detecting means which has a distance detecting means, a relative map and current position storage means, a lattice information storage means, and a map display means. CONSTITUTION:Current position information is inputted with keys 31. A computer 22 reads information out of a map memory 32 and stores it in a memory 34 through a controller 33, and cursor information is stored in a memory 35 and displayed on a display device 36. When cursor movement is performed with the keys 31, the computer 22 determines current positions X and Y according to the movement quantity and stores them in a RAM as initial positions. An azimuth detecting device 20 detects a traveling direction according to the information of the distance sensor 21 to calculate a new position, which is stored in the RAM. Then the contents of the memory 35 are erased temporarily, lattice information is stored, and the new position coincides with an intersection. The cursor information is stored in the memory 35 and relative map information from the memory 34 is displayed on the display device 36. Consequently, the distance between a current position and a destination is easily decided.
