Abstract
PURPOSE:To sustain catalytic activity for a long period and obtain (meth)acrylic acid, by containing a specific amount of molecular O2 in a raw material gas containing saturated monocarboxylic acids and formaldehydes and bringing the resultant raw material gas into contact with a catalyst containing a P-V-O based component. CONSTITUTION:Molecular oxygen in an amount of 0.1-10vol.% based on a raw material gas containing a saturated monocarboxylic acid and/or an ester thereof, such as acetic acid and/or an ester thereof or propionic acid and/or an ester thereof, and formaldehyde and/or a derivative thereof is contained therein and then methanol or water or both are contained. The resultant raw material gas is subsequently brought into contact with a catalyst containing a component expressed by the formula (P, V and O are respectively phosphorus, vanadium and oxygen; a, b and c are the numbers of P, V and O atoms; a is 0.8-2; c is the number of atoms required to satisfy the valences of the components except O when b is 1) at 200-500 deg.C to provide (meth)acrylic acid and/or an ester thereof.
