Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease the thermal expansion of a casting mold and core and to prevent casting defects by pelletizing the slag byproduced at the time of producing ferroalloys to a spherical shape and coating the surfaces thereof with a curable org. binder, thereby forming a material for the casting mold. CONSTITUTION:Easily available ferrochromium slag and ferronickel slag are used as slag. The slag which excels in refractoriness and other properties is the ferrochromium slag. Said slag needs be pelletized to the spherical shape. The spherical slag is produced by discharging the molten slag and injecting high-velocity air to the molten slag to splash the same, thus pelletizing the molten slag to the spherical shape by surface tension. The spherical pellets may be used alone or may be used in combination with silica sand in order to adjust expandability as refractory aggregate. The curable org. binder which is used as a binder of the material for the casting mold may be selected and used as desired. Partial coating of the surfaces of the spherical pellets or the mixture composed of said pellets and silica sand suffices as coating. Full-surface coating is not always necessitated.
