PURPOSE:To enable continuous variation of a spring constant, by a method wherein a gas chamber is formed in succession to an expansion chamber, the gas chamber is communicated with an auxiliary gas chamber, the volume of which is variable, through an on-off valve, and an actuator to vary the volume of the auxiliary gas chamber is provided. CONSTITUTION:With a solenoid valve 8 opened and a control valve 14 switched, a fluid pressures is fed to an expansion chamber 121 and a contraction chamber 122 of a cylinder 12 to move a piston 11. By controlling the volume of an auxiliary gas chamber 9 through movement of the piston, a volume and a gas pressure in a gas chamber 7 are changed, and with the solenoid valve 8 closed, a spring constant can be varied. A gas pressure P detected by a pressure sensor 16 and a stroke from a stroke sensor 17 are inputted to a controller 18, the volume of the gas chamber 7 is computed based on the stroke, a spring constant is computed based on the volume and the gas pressure, the spring constant is compared with a set spring constant from a spring constant setter 19, and a switching signal is outputted to a control valve 14 so that the two spring constants are coincided with each other.
