Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent occurrence of breakdown or deformation at high temp. by providing diametrally penetrating holes from the external surface of the external cylinder contg. a honeycomb body inserted thereinto through the center of the cylinder, inserting a supporting member into each penetrating hole, and welding terminals of the supporting members to the external cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A honeycomb body 3 formed to a roll by piling thin steel plates 1 and corrugated plates 2 alternately and winding them is inserted into a cylindrical external cylinder 4. Then, diametral penetrating holes 11 penetrating through the external cylinder 4 and the center of the honeycomb body 3 are formed at two locations by electric discharge machining, for example, each to a rectangular shape to cross each other. Plate-shaped supporting members 5 having the same shape as the penetrating holes 11 are inserted into the holes, and both terminals of each member are fixed by welding 6 to the external cylinder 4. Since no brazing material is used in a metallic carrier 10 obtd. by this method, the upper limit of the working temp. is not restricted by the melting of brazing material. Therefore, the heat resistance and the mechanical stability are improved.
