Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain methacrolein and methacrylic acid, by reacting isobutylene, etc., with oxygen in a gas phase to give a reaction mixture, fractionating the reaction mixture by a quenching column by plural plates, optimizing temperatures at each plates and contacting method of condensed liquid and a gas and cooling. CONSTITUTION:Isobutylene, tertiary butanol, isobutyl aldehyde or methacrolein is reacted with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in a gas phase in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst to give a reaction gas, which is introduced from a line 10 to a first quenching column 1, a bottom solution is partially taken out by a line 14, sent to a heat exchanger 3, circulated together with a bottom solution of a second quenching column 2 from a line 15 to the first column to make the temperature of the bottom solution at 50-70 deg.C. An incondensable gas is sent from a line 11 to the second quenching column, a gas in a line 16 is made at 10-30 deg.C by circulation of the bottom solution and methacrolein and methacrylic acid are obtained through a line 13. The aimed substances are obtained at low cost of installation without giving rise to polymerization and obstacle of formation of solid materials.
