Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent silk yarns from being worn or torn and yellowed by crosslinking them with a catalyst-containing epoxy compound at a proper extent and modifying the amino termini in the silk yarns in a proper degree. CONSTITUTION: A silk yarn is treated with an aqueous solution of an epoxy compound, particularly ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether or polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether and a catalyst selected from alkali metal salts of dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids, aminopolycarboxylic acids, or amines and magnesium chloride, then crosslinked so that the solubility of the crosslinked product is <=30 wt.%, preferably <=20 wt.%, when the product is soaked in 5 wt.% sodium hydroxide solution at 65 deg.C for 60 minutes, and the dyeing concentration (K/S) (at 520 nm wavelength) of <=7, preferably <=5 at 9% owf with a color reactive red 63. In addition, the crosslinked silk yarns are blocked their chain terminal amino groups whereby novel type silk yarns having non-conventionally excellent resistance to yarn-wearing or tearing and to fiber yellowing are obtained.
