Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a low-loss optical coupler by providing a biconically tapered part to the section of a specified very small length in an arbitrary longitudinal place of a multicored optical fiber and forming the fiber to a biconical shape in this tapered part in nearly a translation state without twisting the fiber cores. CONSTITUTION:This optical coupler is constituted of a 1st core 1a, the 2nd core 1b, a clad 2 common to the two cores and the multicored fibers 3 and has the biconically tapered part after fusing and stretching. The light propagating in the 1st core 1a leaks to the outside of the 1st core 1a in the biconically tapered part 4, is reflected at the boundary of the outside clad layer 2 and the air and enters the 2nd core 1b or directly enters the 2nd core 1b through the inner clad 2. Various coupling ratios are obtainable by adequately designing the tapered shape of the biconically tapered part 4 which is the light coupling part.
