CONSTITUTION:In the reaction of pentaerythritol with hydroxy pivalic aldehyde in the presence of a catalyst, either of the pentaerythritol and hydroxypivalic aldehyde is added into the other to carry out the reaction and afford beta,beta,beta',beta'- tetramethyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diethanol (spiroglycol). Both a hydroxypivalic aldehyde solution and an acid catalyst are preferably added together into an aqueous solution of the pentaerythritol.
