Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal light valve which has a high reflectivity and low transmittance over the entire region of a desired wavelength range and to obviate the generation of crosstalks between picture elements at the time of writing images by providing a light sepn. mirror consisting of island- shaped metallic layers and dielectric layer between a photoconductive layer and liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal layer 5 is formed by subjecting a transparent substrate having transparent electrodes 2' to an orientation treatment, fixing the substrate onto the light sepn. mirror 4 via a spacer and sealing a ferroelectric liquid crystal into the gap formed by the spacer. The light sepn. mirror 4 is formed by alternately laminating the island-shaped metallic layers 8 and the uniform dielectric layers 9. The island-shaped metallic layers 8 are formed by vapor deposition of, for example, aluminum, etc., through a mask to form the island-shaped vapor deposited metal parts 10 which are completely individually separated within the plane. The diffusion of the carriers formed by writing light within the light sepn. mirror is thereby entirely eliminated and the blurring of the written picture elements or the generation of the crosstalks between the picture elements is obviated.
