Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure damping force directly and accurately by securing a piezoelectric element to the piston rod of a shock absorber and providing a pressurizing member for transmitting distortion produced in the piston rod along sliding direction through the force telescoping the shock absorber to the piezoelectric member. CONSTITUTION:A piston rod 6 has a piezo-actuator 11FL for switching the damping force of a variable damping force shock absorber 1FL and a piezo- damping force sensor 12FL for detecting the damping force of the shock absorber 1FL. The sensor 12FL screws a piezoelectric element 19FL made of piezoelectric ceramic such as PZT to the piston rod 6 through a pressurizing member 20FL. A portion of force produced corresponding to axial distortion of the piston rod caused by damping force functioning onto the shock absorber 1FL is transmitted from the pressurizing member 20FL to the piezoelectric element 19FL. Since distortion of the piston rod 6 can be measured directly, damping force can be detected accurately with high response through a simple structure.
