Abstract
PURPOSE:To contrive prolongation of mold life and reduction in production cost, by forming a tantalum nitride coating layer with a proper tantalum content on a cavity surface. CONSTITUTION:A super hard alloy or sintered SiC, etc., is used as a material for a cavity base metal 30 and a desired external shape is simultaneously formed through machining, such as cutting, grinding and polishing. In the process, the side of the forming surface is finished to a desired surface accuracy. A thin tantalum nitride layer 32 is then formed on the surface of the base metal 30 by an activating reaction vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition or chemical vapor deposition method. The tantalum nitride layer 32 in this case is regulated to about 20-80atom.% tantalum content. Since the tantalum nitride layer has extremely low fusibility to glass at high temperatures and surface hardness is high, mold life is prolonged in application to pressing molds 3 and 4. Since the base metal 30 is readily machinable, production cost of the molds 3 and 4 is reduced.
