Abstract

PURPOSE:To contrive prolongation of mold life and reduction in cavity cost, by providing a tantalum layer as a lower layer on a mold base metal and forming a tantalum nitride coating layer on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:A cavity base metal 30 of a super hard alloy or sintered SiC, etc., is subjected to machining, such as cutting, grinding and polishing, to finish the molding surface into a specific surface accuracy. A tantalum layer 31 and tantalum nitride layer 32 are successively formed on the surface on the molding surface side of the base metal 30 by a physical vapor deposition (PVD) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. In the process, the tantalum content in the tantalum nitride layer 32 is 20-80atom.%. Thereby melt adhesion to glass is prevented with hardly any deterioration in accuracy in repeated press molding. As a result, mold life is prolonged. Since the mold base metal 30 is a readily machinable material, mold cost is reduced.
