Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove the carburized layer of the part of a carburized and hardened member requiring the removal of the carburized layer by machining in a simple and sure manner, by tempering only the part by high frequency induction heating to lower the hardness. CONSTITUTION:A member such as a gear or a sliding member is carburized to obtain a member 1 having high surface hardness and high internal toughness. Only the part 2 of the member 1 requiring the removal of the carburized layer is tempered by heating with a high frequency induction heater and by cooling to lower the hardness of the part 2. The carburized layer 6 of the part 2 is then removed, forming a part freed of the carburized layer.
