Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful for chemical industry of high polymer efficiently, in high yield and in high purity without using an organic solvent, by dissolving crude 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulfone in an aqueous solution of a basic substance, carrying out salting-out, separation and acid treatment. CONSTITUTION:Crude 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulfone is dissolved in an aqueous solution of a basic substance (e.g. hydroxide of Na, K, Ca or Mg, especially NaOH) and subjected to salting-out. In the salting-out, chloride of Na, K, Ca or Mg is preferably used and added as an agent for salting-out, an excess amount of the basic substance is added to the solution and an acid such as HCl or H2SO4 is added to the solution to form an agent for salting-out or both the methods are used. After salting-out, precipitate is separated by filtration and then treated with an acid such as HCl to give purified 4,4'- dihydroxydiphenylsulfone.
