Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress defective initialization so that information can be stably recorded and erased by using a porous dielectric material to form at least the part, adjacent to a recording layer, of 1st and 2nd protective layers disposed to sandwich the recording layer. CONSTITUTION:The protective layer 12, the recording layer 13, the protective layer 14 and a reflecting layer are formed in this order on a substrate 11. A recording region 19 is formed on the recording layer 13 by projecting a laser beam 18 for recording thereto. The protective layers 12, 14 are disposed to sandwich the recording layer 13 and are formed of such porous dielectric material as, for example, porous SiO2. The cooling rate in the part of the recording layer 13 where the light beam 18 is projected is thereby lowered and the crystallization and phase change in the part irradiated with the light beam 18 are facilitated and, therefore, the generation of the defective initialization is suppressed and the information is stably recorded and erased.
