Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for polycarbonate in the absence of a solvent by a simple operation selectively, industrially and advantageously, by reacting an aromatic dihydroxy compound with an aryl alkyl carbonate as raw materials. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dihydroxy compound such as bisphenol A shown by formula I is reacted with an aryl alkyl carbonate such as phenyl methyl carbonate or phenyl ethyl carbonate shown by formula II [Ar is (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon group; R is CH3 or C2H5] in the molar ratio used of usually 1:1-1:50 in the absence of a solvent preferably in an inert gas atmosphere such as N2 at 130-250 deg.C, preferably 150-200 deg.C to give the aimed monoalkyl carbonate of aromatic dihydroxy compound such as bisphenol A monomethyl carbonate or the aimed dialkyl carbonate of aromatic dihydroxy compound such as bisphenol A dimethyl biscarbonate.
