Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a lipid containing bis-homo-gamma-linolenic acid and/or arachidonic acid, by culturing a microbial strain capable of producing a lipid containing bis-homo-gamma-linolenic acid and/or arachidonic acid. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain belonging to Conidiobolus genus and capable of producing a lipid containing bis-homo-gamma-linolenic acid and/or arachidonic acid is cultured in a medium containing a carbon source. The culture is continued by replenishing the medium with an unsaturated fatty acid as a carbon source and a lipid containing bis-homo-gamma-linolenic acid and/or arachidonic acid is separated from the cultured product. The microbial strain belonging to Conidiobolus genus is e.g. Conidiobolus heterosporus ATCC 12941. The amount of carbon source to be added to the medium is preferably about 2-5vol.% and the replenishing unsaturated fatty acid is preferably a 18C fatty acid containing 1-3 double bonds.
