Abstract

PURPOSE:To apply a uniform coating layer on an optical fiber, by measuring the extrusion pressure of a polymer in a pressure-coating apparatus for coating an optical fiber with a coating polymer and keeping the ratio of the measured pressure to the drawing speed of the fiber at a specific level. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 3 is produced by melt-spinning an optical fiber preform 1 and the drawing speed of the optical fiber 3 is measured on-line. Pressure of a coating material for the coating of the fiber 3 is measured by a pressure measuring device 10. The measured data is operated with a computing element 11 and compared with a preset data 12 to control the feeding rate of said coating material. The ratio of the drawing speed to the pressure is maintained to 0.0005-0.01kg/cm<2>/m/min.
