Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable realization of an end-type thermal head capable of high resolution and high quality printing by forming two discrete electrode layers at the same interval on both sides of a common electrode layer, and arranging electrodes in a position shifted by half the length of an electrode to the other electrode on each discrete electrode. CONSTITUTION:The first and second discrete electrode layers 21a, 31a are provided with electrodes arranged at the same interval but in a position shifted by half the length of an electrode laterally from each other. As a result, thermal resistors 71, 72 are arranged in a mutually shifted position across a common electrode 4. An electric current at the time of heat generation runs alternately to the first and second discrete electrodes 21a, 22a as an arrow indicates. When a single line is printed by a thermal head, firstly only the thermal resistors 71 on a lower side are caused to generate heat to print the first half every other thermal resistor. Next, when paper 9 moves upward by an interelectrode distance l (a single dot amount), the thermal resistors 72 on an upper side print the remaining half 12. Thus printing of a single line is completed through two stages of printing.
