Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer having high randomness and useful as an elastomer and polymer-modifying material, etc., by polymerizing ethylene and an olefin in the presence of a catalyst derived from a specific solid catalyst component, an organic Al compound and an aromatic compound containing alkoxy group. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene and a 3-10C alpha-olefin is supplied at a molar ratio (alpha-olefin/ethylene) or 0.2-20 and copolymerized in the presence of a catalyst derived from (A) a solid catalyst component containing Mg (e.g. MgO), Ti (e.g. tetramethoxytitanium), a halogen and an electron donor (e.g. dimethyl phthalate or di-n-butyl phthalate) as essential components, (B) an organic Al compound (e.g. trimethylaluminum or ethylaluminum sesquichloride) and (C) an alkoxy-containing aromatic compound of formula [R<1> is 1-20C alkyl; R<2> is 1-10C hydrocarbon group, H or NO2; m is 1-6; n is 0-(6-m)] (e.g. m- methoxytoluene).
