Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a varistor composition having excellent humidity resistance by respectively mixing specified amounts of metal oxides of one of Gd2O3, Tb4O7 and Yb2O3 and one of NiO and Cr2O3 to the main composition containing the specified amount of SrTiO3 and CaTiO3 or MgTiO3 as the remainder. CONSTITUTION:A main composition is fabricated by mixing SrTiO3 of 70.0-99.9mol% and CaTiO3 or MgTiO3 of 30-0.1mol%. This main composition is wet-mixed with a metal oxide of a kind of Gd2O3, Tb4O7 and Yb2O3 and a metal oxide of one of NiO and Cr2O3 so that the predetermined composition ratio can be obtained. After the mixing process, they are temporarily baked under a high temperature. Thereafter, a binder of polyvinyl alcohol is added and the material can be changed to particles. These are compressed and formed into a disk type molded material. This is then baked in a reduction atmosphere and finally conductive metal film electrodes are formed by silver having ohmic contacts to both surfaces of such baked material, thereby completing a varistor. Accordingly, a varistor element having small changing rate of varistor voltage V10 and small static capacitance can be obtained.
