Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a sound absorbing structural material excellent in corrosion resistance by compressing or compression-forming amorphous metallic wool or ceramic wool so that specified gas permeation resistance is imparted. CONSTITUTION: Compressed amorphous metallic wool 6 or compression-formed amorphous metallic wool 8 is packed in the expanded part of a sound arrester and a punched metal 7 is fixed so as to hold the wool under gas permeation. The gas permeation resistance of the compressed body 6 or the compression- formed body 8 has been regulated to 15-180dyn.sec/cm<3> . When a porous metallic sintered plate is used in place of the punched metal 7, it is exposed to severe corrosion because of its very large surface area. The conventional stainless punched metal satisfies requirements but an amorphous metal or ceramic may be used. The resultant structural material can be used in a corrosive atmosphere at a high temp.
