Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent an active alumina layer from flaking off by constituting aluminum foils on all over the surfaces of a base material of a catalyst carrier and by forming alumina films on these aluminum foils. CONSTITUTION:Aluminum foils 2 are laminated on both surfaces of a base plate 1 made of a ferrite type stainless steel. Sprayed layers 4 of lanthanum are formed on the surfaces of aluminum foils 2. Next, the base plate 1, the aluminum foils 2 and the sprayed layers 4 are rolled at once with a mill 5 and each layer is tightly clad into one body. A corrugated plate 6 and a flat plate 7 are formed out of thus treated base plate 1, and they are coiled alternately to form a base structure 8 of a catalyst carrier. Alumina films 9 are formed by heat treating that base structure 8 at a temperature of 800-1,000 deg.C to oxidize the surfaces of aluminum foils 2. Then, a catalyst is carried. By this method, a favorable performance of a catalyst is maintained for a long time.
