Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the titled sintered body of improved thermal shock resistance by sintering a silicon nitride raw material together with Li2O, Al2O3 and SiO2 as auxiliary sintering agents, and depositing the crystal of low thermal expansion or thermal shrinkage in the Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system. CONSTITUTION:The silicon nitride is mixed with, at least, Li2O, Al2O3 and SiO2 as auxiliary sintering agents, and the mixture is formed and then sintered. The grain boundary phase of the obtained silicon nitride sintered body is of low thermal expansion or thermal shrinkage because of depositing the crystal of low thermal expansion or thermal shrinkage in the grain boundary of the sintered body, and this sintered body shows superior resistance to thermal shock. Thus obtained silicon nitride sintered body is suitably available for various purposes requiring the resistance to thermal shock by a rapid heating and quenching such as engine parts for automobile, and others.
