Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve productivity of the title base material containing no foams and generating scarce transmission loss by depositing porous soot for a first clad layer on a glass rod for core, drawing the rod after sintering, then sintering again after depositing porous soot on a second clad layer on the rod. CONSTITUTION:A specified amt. of gaseous starting material (e.g. silane compd.) is flowed from a multilayered pipe burner 1 for forming soot on a glass rod 2 (e.g. quartz) to be formed to a core which has been cleaned previously by subjecting the surface to a specified treatment, while turning the rod 2 and pulling slowly, and porous soot 3 is deposited uniformly by a flame hydrolysis. The glass rod is drawn while sintering in a calcination furnace into which sintering gas is introduced. After cleaning obtd. first clad layer 5, porous soot 4 for a second clad layer is deposited by the similar procedure. The title base material is obtd. by sintering the obtd. clad product.
